1980's and 1990's

Community, by this time had moved to larger premises in London and the company started to stretch its wings. The business was benefiting from improvements in relationships with its suppliers. Community started working more closely with certain suppliers who were willing to change working practices that improved the quality of its food and the conditions in which it was grown and prepared.

Organic Pioneers

By the mid 80's Community had been buying and selling small amounts of organic food as it became available. Frustrated by the lack of range, and concerned about the "organic" status of some suppliers, Community became a board member of a group called "The Good Food Foundation" ( This group, based in Holland and representing 4 countries (UK, Holland, Denmark and France), had a simple aim - to promote the range and availability of
organic foods by taking an active part in its production.

The four members set up a small team (initially in Turkey), that initiated a co-operative with farmers and packers to grow organic produce. The foundation provided expert horticultural knowledge and co-ordination, and the board members undertook the vital last step of guaranteeing a market for the finished product. This relationship resulted in Community and Foundation partners being the first to sell organic sultanas, raisins, apricots, figs and hazelnuts from Turkey (see for more details).This co-operative has survived through the inevitable good and bad years associated with farming. Community and its partners are still there - supporting each other in the pursuit of increasing organic production. From nothing, more than 14,000 tons of organic dried fruit and nut production are now available through the foundation. We now have additional projects in India, Africa and China. Our tonnage grows annually, as the success of the project and the benefits of organic farming become more apparent for other farmers to see.
